I don't know if I'm cut out for to be the junior herdsman. I want to make pets out of all the cattle. Is that too Ellie Mae Clampett of me? Ok, it's not to the point where Houdini needs to be in the house with us...although it might have prevented his escape from the barn last night!!
There I was, on the couch watching The Big Valley, when Cowboy came in and said, "The calf got out of the barn. Help us find him."
Cowboy strapped on his coon hunting belt and light and I grabbed the little flash light. "You won't be able to see with that little thing," Cowboy said. I didn't care; I took it anyway.
We got to the barn lot and the Fireman (he works on the ranch, too and was also wearing a coon hunting light) already had Houdini in custody. The Fireman grabbed the thing by the horns and pulled while Cowboy pushed from behind, and the two of them muscled Houdini back into the barn and closed the doors.
We got back to the house in time to watch the tail-end of......(in a deep booming voice) "The Big Valley." Do you remember that show from the '60's? Here's what I found on the web about the commercial for it...I had to do a lot of searching to find it!!
Sounding the call to high adventure to the turbulent valley that bears the brand of the Barkleys.
See a close knit family, torn by bitter strife ... (Cuts to, "If I want your backtalk I'll ask for it!" Nick slap of Heath from Night of the Wolf.)
Meet Victoria, a woman of backbone and bite.
Jarrod, the eldest ...
Nick, the strongest ...
Audra, a girl too impetuous to play it safe ...
And Heath, the outsider, fighting for recognition in THE BIG VALLEY (echo) THE BIG VALLEY

My grandmother loved that show...she called it her "program" -- how cute is that?
