The day started out deliciously cool. We had our coffee outside….mmmmm. I did some indoor stuff…like laundry. A new development this week….the Cowboy has a real Ranch-hand now. A guy with actual upper-body strength and some experience around the farm. I’m not sure if I should be insulted or not…so I’m not. I mean really…did I actually expect to be the Cowboy’s assistant for the stuff like fixing roofs and stretching fence and digging postholes???? Don’t be upset…I’m ok with it all. I supervised while Cowboy and Ranch-hand reset some of the bricks on the back patio and made sure the guys stayed hydrated….gotta stay hydrated!!
Dinner special of the day: Meatloaf sandwiches and chips. I warm up the meatloaf slices…some people like them cold.
My supervision wasn’t required on fixing and painting the roof on the hay barn…YAY!! Watching Ranch-hand clamber up that ladder like a monkey and hang on with his toes while he leans over to paint makes my palms sweat even now. So I did a little reading and writing till time to fix supper.
Supper special of the day: Chicken salad sandwiches and fried potatoes and sliced tomatoes. I get a weird sense of accomplishment when I use up a bunch of stuff out of the pantry and refrigerator. Even though I’m gonna have to restock, it’s ok….like starting fresh.
After supper we went over to see if welder-guy was home…nope. I asked Cowboy if we could get back to the farm by way of the crooked creek road. He didn’t answer, he just turned left just like I wanted and we meandered our way back. Along the way we saw a whitetail buck run across the road and into the woods for cover. I pretend-shot at him….aww, missed again. I wonder if I could shoot a deer. I had a super-cool great aunt that went deer hunting. I probably didn’t get those genes.
When we got back, we watered the cattle and horses. The Cowboy ordered, “Write down the ear tag numbers of those four new heifers. I can’t read them; they’re too dirty.”
Like I have super-human eyesight that can penetrate mud on an ear tag!! Now that's the kind of farmhand stuff I like!! I had to do a lot of walking---the heifers wouldn’t stand still!! And Aussie Pup kept trying to herd them---Not helping!! But I got all the numbers WITH MY SUPER-HUMAN EYESIGHT.
We checked out a couple of the hay fields. I HAD MY BOOTS ON!!! The grass hay field got “burnt up” in all those super hot days. If we get some good rains this fall, it might come back for next year. The alfalfa hay field looks good. The Cowboy will cut it today and we’ll bale in a couple days. I hope I get to drive the tractor again.
Dessert of the day: Keebler fudge grahams while watching the news channel.
Went to bed reminiscing about the old days when Deputy, Peach and Princess were all young. We sure have a happy life.
